Navigators: Grades 6 – 8
Navigators Grades 6-8 Wednesdays, 6:00-7:10 p.m.
Worshiping with the congregation is the most important component of Navigators. It is at worship that we learn the Bible stories, hymns, and prayers which nourish our faith our whole life long. During the season of Lent, Navigators worship with the congregation on Wednesday evenings.
At the beginning of the year, each Navigator will work with his/her parent(s) to create a covenant. The covenant is modeled around the five promises made by parents at baptism and affirmed by youth at confirmation, and provides the details of the Navigator’s commitment to learning and growing in faith in the coming year. Pastor Amber and Sue Megrund provide appropriate support and resources to help Navigators and their families stay on track with these faith commitments.
The five baptismal promises are:
- to live among God’s faithful people,
- to hear the word of God and share in the Lord’s supper,
- to proclaim the good news of God in Christ through word and deed,
- to serve all people, following the example of Jesus, and
- to strive for justice and peace in all the earth.
Navigator lessons are presented on a three-year rotation: Old Testament, New Testament, and Small Catechism. This year’s lessons are focused on the Old Testament.
Each month, two online lessons are provided on a given topic and completed by Navigators. Parents are also welcome to participate in online lessons.
On Wednesday nights, Navigators engage in a variety of activities and discussions related to the month’s topic. The final 15 minutes of each evening are spent together as a group, reflecting on their experiences.
Opportunities for Navigators and their families are scheduled throughout the year for service projects and learning about other faith traditions.
A spring retreat includes all Navigators.
Serving during fellowship on Sundays
Navigator students will participate in the life of the congregation by serving as coffee and treat servers on Sunday mornings. Students serve with their families and peers, and are scheduled to serve 3-4 times during the year.
9th Grade Navigators
The heart of our 9th-grade ministry is mentoring. Young people choose a mentor who meets with them monthly throughout the year at a time that is convenient for both, engaging in one-to-one conversations that explore issues of faith. A summer trip such as the ELCA Youth Gathering, a mission trip or camp is also an important part of this year as youth explore living out their faith in a new setting.
The Rite of Confirmation is in the fall of 10th grade on Reformation Sunday (the last Sunday in October).
