Boundary Waters Canoe Trip

What is the BWCA?  In the northern reaches of Minnesota, a million acres of God’s creation have been set aside as a protected wilderness area. Thousands of lakes, but no motors. Premium vacation property, but no houses. Thousands of visitors every year, all seeking solitude, challenge, personal growth, friendship, and introspection. This is the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, and you're invited.

What are the details? St. Barnabas Lutheran will be leading a group of up to 7 students (grades 7-12) into this beautiful land this summer. Paddling from shore to shore, and portaging from lake to lake, carrying food and equipment, we’ll explore our faith in a way that can only be done free from life’s distractions. We’ll begin with a drive north, and we’ll depart civilization as we head up the Gunflint Trail from Grand Marais. After a night in the bunkhouse of Voyageur Canoe Outfitters, we’ll paddle into Seagull River and enter the BWCA.

From there, we’ll decide as a group which lakes to explore, where to camp, what to do, and how long to stay
before moving on. Fishing, swimming, lounging, day trips, solitude, campfires, and devotions under blue skies and the star-filled heavens will fill our time. We’ll see soaring eagles, share campsites with squirrels, and hear the call of the loon. With luck, we may see a moose foraging along the shore. On the fifth day in the BWCA, we’ll paddle back to the outfitter and clean up for the ride home. The cost will be approximately $300 per youth. The cost may fluctuate based on transportation cost, outfitter cost, and other expenses beyond our control.

What about adult supervision? The trip is led by Dennis Manson and an adult volunteer who have significant experience in the BWCA and canoeing. Since the trip is limited to only 7 youth, that is a 1 adult to 3 youth ratio.

So how do I sign up? Complete a Register form and Attach a $125 deposit check; the rest of the amount will be due closer to the trip dates. This trip is open to current 7th-12th graders. Priority will be given to graduating seniors who are active in the youth program.

What if I have other questions? Contact Dennis Manson at 763.553.1239 or email them at dmanson@stbarnabaslutheran.org.
